Sinking-fund planner
Known irregular expenses, planned monthly.
Most surprise expenses are not surprises. Car insurance renews every year. The dentist has been on the calendar since last October. December arrives on the same date it always does. What surprises us is that we did not divide any of those numbers by twelve.
List the ones you can remember, divide each by twelve, and move the monthly total into a separate account each payday. The math is small; the calm is not.

- List every irregular expense you can remember — Annual bills, gifts, car maintenance, travel, subscriptions billed yearly.
- Divide each annual number by twelve — Round up if it makes the arithmetic easier. This is a plan, not a proof.
- Move the monthly total into a separate savings account each payday — A named account, not your checking. Out of sight, present when needed.
